A new year is here, which means homeowners have new resolutions for 2022. If keeping your home clean and tidy is one of your New Year’s Resolutions, don’t make these cleaning mistakes that will wreck your beautiful home (it’ll hurt your resale value!)
1. Flushing “flushable” wipes
While many cleaning and baby wipes claim to be flushable, they really aren’t since they don’t break down quick enough. These wipes can be especially troublesome if you have old plumbing because the wipes will build up and cause a clog. Instead, get into the habit of throwing them away.
2. Cleaning marble countertops with vinegar
White vinegar has become a popular cleaning solution for a lot of items. But there’s some items that shouldn’t come into contact with white vinegar and one of them is natural stone surfaces. Because of the vinegar’s acidity, it will cause etching on your marble or granite countertops. A solution is to clean your marble regularly with dish soap and warm water.
3. Overusing dirty kitchen sponges
We know damp areas create bacteria, mold, and other grossness, and a sponge is no different! In fact, sponges are the perfect grounds for germs and bacteria. And the myth of microwaving the sponge to disinfect it isn’t true. To avoid spreading the germs from your sponge around your kitchen, replace your sponge once a week, or switch to a dish brush.
4. Spraying cleaning products directly on surfaces
Spraying cleaning products directly on surfaces can cause a lot of issues. Discoloration, residue buildup, solution seeping into the backing, and causing water spots are some of the effects of cleaning spray directly on the surface. Save yourself the damage, and instead spray the cleaning cloth first, then wipe down the surface.
